Go Naked OR Maybe Just Pack Light

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

Our family seems to always have some kind of outing on the schedule. Especially with kids, even the day trips require packing. Since I don’t think my family can realistically travel naked, even though my 2-year-old would probably love it, I need effective systems for packing clothing and gear.

Anytime I am packing for an overnight trip, I use a list and check it twice (Santa isn’t the only one who can benefit from this system). I keep a digital copy of my packing list on my phone, so it can easily be accessed. When gathering my list, I think about- Eat, Wake, Sleep… what does my family need for each of these daily activities? To save time and make things easier to locate, I pack things in the same spot or pocket every time. While travelling and when unpacking, I assess my list and add anything I may have forgotten to the list. I pride myself in being prepared, and I really get a kick out of using everything I pack. Any unused item gets taken off the list, or at least bumped down in priority. The real winners are my dual-purpose items. I also always bring along food and a reusable water bottle.

Here are some other tips to save time AND pack light:

The 3 Bag System- I use the same 1-3 bags for basically every trip.

1. Backpack- Always a great bag to have!

2. Purse or Laptop- Ideally this bag can fit inside the backpack.

3. Rolling Suitcase- The smallest one that will work for your trip.

Leave your bags partially packed with travel designated items:

  • Toiletries- A fully stocked travel toiletry kit is an awesome time saver.

  • Category Bags- I use cloth and plastic bags to divide stuff in my luggage. I have a bag for: underwear and socks, my clothes, kid’s clothes, diapers and wipes, dirty laundry, shoes, and accessories.

  • Helpful accessories- Nightlight, chargers, sewing kit, airplane pillow, socks and/or slippers, pen and paper, vitamins, tea, and snacks.

Less is More-

  • Use your accommodation amenities… Call ahead to find out what things are provided where you are staying. I can generally avoid having to pack things like- kid’s beds, pillows, blankets, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soaps, robes, and other linens (Pro Tip= hotel towels make a great substitute for burp clothes and changing pads).

  • Bring fewer shoes- Shoes take up too much room! Wear your biggest pair and pack your smallest. I limit myself to 2 pairs of shoes for most trips.

  • Bring ONE jacket- Ideally this jacket packs small and matches everything.

  • Plan to wear things multiple times- Pants, shirts, jackets, shoes, and other warm layers can usually stay pretty clean while travelling. If you know you are going to sweat or get dirty, pack and wear lightweight workout clothes and base layers.

  • Pick out your favorite outfits- There is no need to carry a bunch of “just in case” items…1 extra outfit will do the trick. And bringing your favorite clothes will ensure you look and feel great all trip.

  • Shower and shave at home,so you can avoid bringing these items.

  • Embrace Dual Purposes- Can an app on your phone replace things like flashlights, alarm clocks, sound machines, and maps? Can your suitcase work as a bassinet for your infant? Can a certain clothing item be worn multiple ways? Can your kid’s wet wipes be used a million different ways?

  • Buy consumable things upon arrival- A quick stop to the store can usually supply things like diapers, wipes, food, and drinks. Or if you do pack these items you will have the benefit of a much lighter suitcase on the way home.

Hopefully these tips help lighten your travel load!

Love Always,

Meg
