“Be our guest, be our guest, put our service to the test!”
I can’t help but think of Beauty and the Beast when I consider hosting people in our home. In this film, the joyful servants create an environment anyone would appreciate. Not all homes have a dedicated guest room, but even a temporary guest space can serve people well. Some of my fondest memories are times where I slept in a tent or on a floor to be close to family and friends. Keeping things simple helps everyone enjoy gathering. So, what are the difference makers in creating a cozy guest accommodation???
First and foremost, a comfortable sleeping spot is crucial. The same Feng Shui rules apply to guest beds as in any other room (see, “Room by Room, Bedrooms”). And while a dedicated guest bed generally works best, often times a foam sleeping pad can elevate couches and floors into suitable sleep places. Pillows are worth investing in and good sheets are universally appreciated. Most people love a soft lightweight comforter, and using layered blankets allows people to adjust to temperature preferences.
The little things make the biggest difference in a guest room. Plants are my every room recommendation (see “Positively Planting It”). Blackout curtains are awesome. A small fan provides white noise and air circulation. Night lights can be used to make bathroom trips easy. These days, most people use their phone as an alarm clock, so a lamp (within reach of bed) with outlets on the base works great. An elevated place to hold suitcases (like a spare chair, bench, or ottoman) is thoughtful. I also like to offer guests a spot to hang clothes and store their toiletries. Finally, something that smells good (a candle or flowers) is a nice touch.
My favorite hotels supply good quality bath products. A soft towel, tissues, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion are the essentials. I think the most important way to prepare a bathroom for guests is by cleaning it. Even a quick wipe down can transform things. If you want to elevate your guest accommodations, bathrobes and slippers are totally next level (as in I don’t even provide these for our guests yet).
It has been said that, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and this definitely applies to guest rooms. Clearing clutter and opening up space is key.
Most guest rooms serve a dual purpose, and this can work well as long as the alternative purpose is easy to backburner while guests are visiting. We have two guest rooms. One doubles as storage and the other is Brad’s home office 99% of the time (See “Room by Room, Office”). I love hosting people in our home thanks to our simple setup.
We would love to host you so, go ahead and be our guest!!!
Love Always,
Meg
